Before joining, I often felt like I had to wait for the “right moment” or a larger platform to make a difference. But being a part of a small volunteer program opened my eyes to the quiet power of local, consistent impact. I saw how one act of kindness, one gesture of encouragement, or one moment of leadership could create impact far beyond its origin. I noticed how the other volunteers lit up when they felt included and trusted with responsibility. This program didn’t just inspire me, it shifted something in me. It taught me that leadership is not about authority or recognition, but about stepping into small moments with intention. I want to be able to spread this way of uplifting the people around me to all those in my life. Even if the impact is on an individual level, I still believe that making an impact on a single person is worthy of recognition in itself.
(Ian Wong)
The program inspired me to mobilize those around me by sharing what I’ve learned and encouraging them to make a positive impact. With my family, I took the initiative to show them what a balanced, healthy meal should include — such as dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, and proteins — so they could make more informed choices about their health. I was also motivated to influence my friends to help others in need. Visiting Poverty Encounter and Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles was an eye-opening experience. It was shocking to witness the harsh living conditions of people who share the same world as us. Many are trapped in a cycle of poverty, unable to change their situation — just as we learned in Poverty Encounter. Since then, my friends and I have made an effort to support those less fortunate. Whenever we encounter someone in need, we try to offer food or water as a small act of kindness.
(Hao Quan Liao)
